Ice Breaker: Where did you get your first Bible? Do you still have it? Does it hold any significant value to you?

Worship: Prepare ahead of time to have someone in your group share a Psalm, song or poem that they enjoy that draws them closer to God.

Word:

1.What has been your personal experience with the Bible? What are your beliefs about it? Are you able to spend time reading or studying it?

2.What is your favorite story or passage in the Bible? This can be one you have heard or read, don’t worry if you do not know all the details, we can work on that.

3.Do you have any Bible Question’s that you need answered? Your group is a great resource to have these questions answered.

2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT)
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

1.Have you ever broken a rope, a chain, or something you were pulling on?

2.Look over the sermon notes. Are there any of the points that you strongly agree or disagree with?

3.Were there any of the points that spoke to you in a special way?

4.Do you carry anger or tension over a past hurt that still impacts your life?

The Hope of Heaven

Luke 2:1-20

Pastor Paul M. Reinhard

Welcome: Did you have a special or extra fun moment this Christmas?

Worship: Spend some time and connect with God! Read a poem, say a prayer, or sing a song. You are the Body of Christ, and He is present and active when you meet in His name!

Word: When God became flesh and moved into the neighborhood it changed our world forever. The fact that God did not come to a fancy hotel or a plush palace says something profound about His plan. When the dusty shepherds arrived to greet the baby Jesus and the religious leaders stayed home in Jerusalem it confirmed that God was up to something new and amazing. When the Wise Men came with gifts from afar it testified to the scope of God's plan. Two thousand years have gone by and the Christmas Story is still the single most acted out and sung about fact of history. Ponder the paradox and marvel of what God has done, and is still doing!

1.Who is your favorite character in the story about the birth of Jesus? Is their part of the story you really like? Why?

2.Do you think Mary or Joseph ever wondered why they were in a stable, giving birth to the Messiah? How do you think they felt that night 2,000 years ago?

3.If you were Mary, and the shepherds came running in telling all about the singing angels and their amazing message ... how would it impact your faith? Has anybody ever shared a message with you or done something that really increased your faith?

4.Is their something going on in your life right now that could use a "shot of faith?"
Take time to pray for one another!

Something for Reflection:
There once was a flock of birds who forgot to fly south for the winter. Now it was late in December and it was getting awfully cold. God loved those birds and didn't want them to freeze so He sent His only Son to become a bird and to show them the way to a warm barn where they would be saved from the cold. Most of the birds were leery of this cocky new bird who said he knew the way to safety. The leaders of the flock felt threatened by this bird so they killed him. Some of the flock believed this new bird and were saved from the cold by flying to the warm barn as the new bird had directed. Most of the flock however refused to believe this bird and they died from the cold.

Witness: Ask God to give you the opportunity to have a special spiritual conversation ... be praying that it will lead to the point where you can share the ABC's! Remember, it's not how much you know, it's how much you care, and what you are willing to share, with somebody who trusts you enough to talk about their life and journey!

Admit you're a sinner (Romans 3:23)
Believe Christ Died for you (John 3:16)

Choose to Follow Jesus Upward, Inward, Outward, & Forward (Matt 4:19)
Dive into a Life Group (Acts 2:42-47)
Enjoy the Journey (Psalm 28:7)

Luke 1:57-80 Hope in the Promises of God

December 20, 2009

Worship:Begin your time together by connecting with God through songs, prayers, and creative arts. Invite the Holy Spirit to move and minister in your group! Be open to God’s leading and presence! Enjoy this time with God and each other!

Welcome:Have you ever lived [or do you now live] somewhere where it snowed for Christmas? Did you, or do you, like it?

Thoughts from the Message:

Life moves in _____________ times and seasons. Luke 1:57

We do not always ____________________ what God is doing. Luke 1:66

We can spend time in the _____________________________ on the way to our destination. Luke 1:80

Trust God for His ____________________________________. Proverbs 3:5-6

Word:John the Baptist had an amazing role in history. The Angel Gabriel declared his birth. He was born to Godly though aged parents. He was the prophet who cleared the way for the Messiah. He was a rugged man of the desert who preached, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” He proclaimed Jesus to be “the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” Then he had the amazing privilege of baptizing Jesus in the Jordan River. His humility and perspective shined through when he declared to his follower that the ministry of Jesus must increase, and his must decrease. Then he died for his faith, leaving behind his head on an evil king’s platter. The powers of sin and evil sought to snuff out the candle of John’s life. Instead, they sent his powerful testimony blazing down through the centuries. May our witness for Christ be touched with the boldness of St. John!

1.Have you ever done something that had a schedule you could not control? Something like having a baby, planting a garden, or waiting for your computer to restart? How does it feel not to be in control? How do you handle it?

2.We are going to look at several ways of listening to God. Have you ever used them? How did it work? Can you give an example of a time when God really spoke to you through this means? Are you a good listener?

A.The Holy Spirit and prayer. Acts 13:2

B.Friends, family, mentors, and fellow Christ followers. Colossians 3:16

C.A book, story, or article that came into your hands. Ecclesiastes 12:9-12

D.From the Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

E.Through nature, worship, silence, or solitude. Psalm 46:10-11

3.Do you need God’s leading about something right now? Take some time to pray for one another. Be open to the presence and leading of the Holy Spirit.
Be open to any verses of scripture that come to mind as you wait on God.

Witness:You will find yourself in many different settings this Christmas Season. There will be office parties, family celebrations, and chance meetings with old friends. Allow these words of Jesus in Matthew 5:16 to guide you. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Be the eyes and ears, hands and feet, of our Lord Jesus!

Luke 1:39-56 Living Hope

December 13, 2009

Worship: Begin your time together by connecting with God through songs, prayers, and creative arts.Invite the Holy Spirit to move and minister in your group!Be open to God’s leading and presence!

Welcome: Think back to your childhood. Was there a special person’s home you loved to go to for Christmas? What made it special?

Word:Two thousand years ago, the Jews lived under Rome’s thumb. Enemy soldiers walked the streets and foreign rulers collected the tax. Every good Jew prayed for God to send a deliverer who would set them free. The promise of Messiah had rolled down through the centuries! Then Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her she was the one through whom the Messiah would come. We cannot even imagine what Mary must have been thinking in the days following the angels visit!

1. Read Luke 1:39-45…

A. What happened to Elizabeth when Mary greeted her? [41]

B. How did Elizabeth know that Mary was pregnant with the Lord? [42-44] You need to do some creative thinking about this question. It doesn’t really give a direct answer.

C. Why was Mary blessed? [45]

2. I sense something important in the fact that Mary hurried off to the home of Elizabeth and Zechariah.

A. Gabriel told Mary that Elizabeth was pregnant in her old age! Do you think this was an encouragement to Mary that she was not crazy? Why?
B. Luke 1:6 (NLT) Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous in God's eyes, careful to obey all of the Lord's commandments and regulations.

Mary had an amazing experience with an angel of God. She received life changing news. It makes sense that she would desire the company of Godly people!

3. Think about needing a spiritual friend! What are some of the things you would be looking for! Describe them!

Prayer: Thank you Lord for your servants who remind us of Jesus.Thank you for their love, wisdom, kindness, patience, and insight. Thank you for the gentle yet powerful sense of the Holy Spirit that we experience when we are with them.Thank you for the gift these special people are to our lives.

Take us Lord, and do a deep work within us, that we might become one of those people. Forgive us our sins. Cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Grant us compassion, peace, joy, and a servant’s heart that we might welcome those you lead to us. Let us think your thoughts, speak your words, and do your deeds. Grant us both competence and character that we might shine in public and private!

In Jesus name, AMEN

Witness: You will find yourself in many different situations this Christmas. There will be office parties, family celebrations, and chance meetings with old friends. Bold Faith

Northpoint Christian Fellowship

Pastor Chris Reinhard

December 6, 2009

Icebreaker – If you asked your family members what you complain about most, what would they say? Why do you complain about that?

Worship: Spend some time in worship of your creator. Whether that is through song, praise, thanksgiving, scripture reading, etc…

Word:

1.Share with your group a time when you really needed someone to come through for you and they did. How did you feel?

2.What about a time when you really needed or wanted them to come through and they did not. How did you feel?

3.How would you describe faith? How does that apply to faith in God? How is it different or the same as faith in a friend or spouse?

4.What do you think about this quote? “Faith makes things possible, not easy.”

5.What is one area of your life that is requiring you to live by faith? How are you responding to it?

6.When Mary was faced with a situation that required faith we see her respond in some very specific ways. Read Luke 1:26-38 together.

7.When you are placed in a position that requires faith how do you deal with the following things.

a.Humility – When a situation that requires faith presents itself, do you humble yourself before God and wait for his instruction or do you demand that you have rights that need to be met, or are you somewhere in between. Explain.

b.Security – Are you willing to give up earthly security to experience God in a new way? Or do you hold on to the worldly around you in times of uncertainty?

c.Joy or Self Pity – in vs. 46 and following we see Mary take complete joy in the experience she is headed towards. When you are in a faith situation do you use it as a time to celebrate what God has already done, or to worry about what is yet to come?

d.Submission – In the end Mary responds with full submission. “I am the Lord’s Servant.” When you are in a position of uncertainty do you want to take the reins or give them to God?

8.What are areas of faith that your group can be praying for you about. Remember that faith is something that grows and increases through relationship with Christ. The more we understand that Christ loves us, the easier it is to trust him completely.

Witness: Take some time to share with one another your experiences in sharing your faith over the past few weeks. If you have not had an opportunity to share your faith, have your group pray that God will open up some opportunities

November 29, 2009

Worship: Begin your time together by connecting with God through songs, prayers, and creative arts. Boldly declare in prayer that the Holy Spirit is invited to move and minister in your group! Be open to God's leading and presence!

Welcome: How was your Thanksgiving? What was special this year?

Word: This season we are going to look at the Christmas story from the book of Luke. We are going to look at Zechariah, Elizabeth, John the Baptist, Mary, Joseph, Jesus, Angels, Shepherds, and Wise Men.

As we look through the story, we are going to pay special attention to three special words. We will see how Faith, Hope, and Love weave through the coming of Christ. People responded to the promises of God in Faith. Hope called people to reach beyond themselves and grab hold of God's Kingdom. Over it all and through it all we discover the Love of God breaking forth in the lives of His people.

For some this story will be a new journey. Others of you have read the Christmas Story a multitude of times. No matter how many times you have heard this story, listen again with your hearts open to fresh Faith, Hope, and Love.

1. What are some of the challenges facing people in our country right now?

2.Can you identify with any of these?

3.Read the story of Zechariah from Luke 1:5-25...

A.What does it feel like to have a dream, or a hope, that does not seem to be coming true?

B.How easy is it to give up on a dream?

C.What does it take to get a dream back?

4. Do you have a dream, or a need, that your Life Group can be praying about? Keep in mind that God is not a genie in a bottle. He meets us on His terms, not ours. But Jesus said, "And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will be given what you ask for. Keep on looking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened." Luke 11:9 What door do you need opened?

Remember and be encouraged: The Bible is filled with people who crashed, burned, and desperately needed a second chance. Adam and Eve were kicked out of the garden. Moses ran for his life from Pharaoh. David hid in the wilderness from Saul. Elijah triumphed over the prophets of Baal by the power of God, then freaked out and ran away from Jezebel. John Mark bailed out on his missionary journey with Paul. Peter denied Christ. Each ofthese faith heroes was given a second chance!

Close your time in prayer: Ask God to give you a revelation of who He is and what He has for you. Pray for the brothers and sisters who are frustrated and struggling. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Allow your Life Group to be the birthing place for Faith, Hope, and Love!
Notes:

Witness: Celebrate the Christ of Christmas with your OIKOS this holiday season! Remember 1 Peter 3:15-16 (NLT) Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if you are asked about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it. [16J But you must do this in a gentle and respectful way ...

"If you love me, obey my commandments. [16] And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, who will never leave you. [17] He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. Acts 19 The Turning Point

November 1, 2009

Worship: Spend this time connecting with God through songs, prayers, and creative arts. Boldly declare that the Holy Spirit is free to move and minister through your group!

Welcome: Have you ever forgotten to set your clock when the time changes?

Word: This week Pastor Paul shared the pivotal roll that Acts 19:19 played in his spiritual journey! The story of Acts 19 is set in the ancient city of Ephesus. The goddess Artemis [Diana in the Latin] was the principle spiritual power of the area! God used the Apostle Paul to challenge her… and the Kingdom of God won!

1. Are things such as crystals, fortunes, curses, magic, and astrological signs still available in our world? How do people you know use them?

2. Can you think of any books or movies that focus on the occult that have been popular over the last few years?

3. Pastor Paul shared about reading Acts 19 in the room of his Army barracks in the late summer of 1977. When he read verse 19 God called him to a moment of decision. You can continue doing what you have been doing, or you can follow me! Paul packed up all of his non-Christian spiritual books and headed for the dumpster at JFK Memorial Chapel, Ft. Bragg, NC.

Read Acts 19:17-20 from a couple of different translations. Reflect together on four key things that stand out! Are these things easy? Why or why not?

A. They confessed their sin.
B. They destroyed what was causing them to sin.
C. It cost them dearly.
D. The gospel spread widely with powerful effect.

6. Are their things in your life that keep you in sin and make you weak in your service to God?

A. Are you willing to confess them to someone you trust?

B. Are you willing to destroy them and pay the price if necessary?

[This could mean throwing out movies, magazines, alcohol, drugs, and your favorite bong. It could mean deleting files on your computer and not returning to certain websites. It might mean quitting a job or ending a toxic relationship.]

Keep in mind that in today’s dollars 50,000 pieces of silver would be about $4,000,000. The people who accepted Christ, repented of theirs sins, and burned the scrolls of Ephesus and Artemis were doing a spiritually radical and financially costly thing! That one moment changed their lives and legacy forever!

If Pastor Paul had not loaded a bag with books and thrown them away that day in 1977 I doubt he would be writing out these notes for you today! If Paul had said no to God that day, there is no telling where he would be now!

Closing Prayer: Shine your light Oh Lord my God into the depth of my heart. Reveal the sins that keep me from serving you freely and completely. Give me the Holy Ghost power to go through my house, my work, my car, and my life with Jesus. Help me to gather up everything that holds me back, and let me throw it away. Break the hold of Satan on my life, my family, my legacy, my home, my job, my church, and my city… In the powerful and precious, name of my Lord and my Savior, Jesus the Christ,AMEN

Witness: Acts 19:20 (NLT) So the message about the Lord spread widely and had a powerful effect. If we obey Him, He will use us in amazing ways!

Acts 18 People and Places
October 25, 2009

Welcome: When you were a child, whose house in the neighborhood did you like to play at, and why?

Worship: We are here to meet with God and one another. Spend some time entering the Fathers presence. Sing some songs. Read a Psalm. Playa song or a video on the TV or stereo. Open in prayer. Thank the Lord for being in you, and with you! Expect the Holy Spirit to move in your midst! He is with you!

Word: This week we took a quick look at some of the different places the gospel went in the Book of Acts. We also looked at a few of the different people who connected in the Book of Acts. Today in our Life Group, we are going to do some thinking about how the Gospel spreads!

1.Have you been watching the news about the H1N1 virus? How is this swine Flu spreading?

2.Think about Sundays Sermon ... how was the spread of the gospel in the Book of Acts like the swine flu?

3.What can we learn from this comparison?

4.Let's look at this fellow named Apollos. We don't know much about him, but
What we do know is very fascinating.

A.Read Acts 18:24-28. What important action is taking place in this passage?

B.Now go backwards in the story and read Acts 18:1-4. Do some imagining here.

5.Do some imagining. How can your life look more the New Testament story of people and places? What do you think happened in the Paul to Aquila-Priscilla to Apollos progression?

Witness: As you think about our call to share the gospel, consider Ananias in Acts 9:1O. This brother only shows up in one New Testament story. He is the godly disciple who shares Christ with Saul, who is soon to become the Apostle Paul. We know all about Paul, and the amazing ministry God has given him. But what about this man who went in spite of his fear and in obedience to pray with Saul and share Christ? When we obey God and take our place in the unbroken chain of Christian witness ... there is no telling what God will do!

Welcome: Do you like the indoors or the outdoors best?

Worship: You are here to meet with God and one another. Spend some time entering the Fathers presence.Sing some songs.Read a Psalm.Play a song or a video on the TV or Stereo. Open in prayer. Thank the Lord for being in you, and with you! Expect the Holy Spirit to move in your midst! He is with you!

Word:This Sunday we looked at the Apostle Paul getting chased out of Thessalonica, Berea, and ending up in Athens. We talked about the idols that filled Athens and the Festivals that passed on the traditions from generation to generation. Then we saw Paul preach a brilliant sermon on Mars Hill with minimal results.

1.Have you ever gone fishing and caught fish, and then gone fishing and not caught fish. What was the diffrents?

2.Have you ever shared your faith and something really exciting came of it? Have you ever shared your faith and nothing happened? What was the difference?

3.Read Acts 17:19-23. What did Paul do to “build a bridge” with his audience? Was it effective?

4.Athena [the goddess of wisdom and art] was the spirit of Athens. Paul used the presence of many idols as his starting point in sharing the gospel. Think about your oikos [circle of influence] here in San Bernardino. What could your starting point be to speak with people about Christ? Have you experienced this lately?

5.Read Acts 17:30-31. Keep in mind that Paul was preaching to an idol-worshiping congregation. Is it safe to say that these words ‘hit the heart’ of Paul’s audience? How do you handle it when the Bible begins to confront somebody you are sharing Christ with?

Homework: Read 1 Corinthians 1:18-31. Keep in mind that Paul went from Athens to Corinth in his travels. Later, when he wrote to the Corinthians, he emphasized that their faith did not rest upon the wisdom of his preaching. Is it possible that Paul learned something in Athens that influenced the rest of his ministry? Be encouraged by the Apostle’s words!

Witness: Be ready this week to ‘build a bridge” to somebody that God puts in your path! Remember, even the Apostle Paul won some, and lost some! Our job is to share the Good News! Only God can save a soul!

Acts 16 Freedom in Christ
Pastor Paul M.Reinhard
October 11, 2009

Welcome: Do you drive to fast, to slow, or just right?

Worship: You are here to meet with God and one another. Spend some time entering the Fathers presence. Sing some songs. Read a Psalm. Play a song or a video on the TV or Stereo. Open in prayer, thanking the Lord for being in you, and with you! Expect the Holy Spirit to move in your midst! He is with you!

Word: This week we looked at Acts 16. The Holy Spirit led Christians. One was called to serve. God saved and delivered others. People were beaten and put in prison. God moved in mighty ways and delivered His children. God touched entire families with His saving power. One entire city was in an uproar! That is an amazing amount of activity to find in just 40 verses.

1. Have you ever played with dominos? Have you ever stood them end to end and then knocked them over? Describe this process.

2. Think about your Life Group, and the people you know who have accepted Christ recently. Can you think of any domino patterns in their stories?

3. In Acts 16 we see people being "led of the Holy Spirit." Can you think of a time? When you sensed the Holy Spirit leading you? Did you obey? What happened?

4. Read Acts 16:16-18. In this text, Paul casts out a pneuma puthon. This was a python spirit. This is a specific term in the Greek language, which refers to the spirit of divination that was located in the very famous Oracle of Delphi. [CO Peter Wagner, Blazing the Way, The Acts of the Holy Spirit] In Greek tradition, mentally challenged or gifted people were believed to have lost their minds to give room to the god's. When Paul cast out this powerful spirit of divination and the owners lost their profit, it stirred up the entire city!

Is their a spirit in your OIKOS? If it were cast out, would things be stirred up? What name would you give the spirit? Will you pray for it to leave? If you begin to pray in this manner, take it very seriously. This type of prayer takes us into the arena of spiritual warfare! [Ephesians 6:11-12 and 2 Corinthians 10:3-5]

5. Paul and Silas were arrested, beaten, and put in jail for doing good and obeying God. Their response was to ...

A. Pray and Sing to God.
B. Do good to their jailer.
C. Share Christ with Him.
D. Baptize him.
E. Eat with him.

How would you respond to somebody who had locked you up in jail?

Witness: The jailer watched what Paul and Silas did. He saw how God moved on their behalf. Remember ... people are watching you. They listen to what you say and they watch how you respond to adversity! God through you is a powerful witness to those who are watching! It is not just about us, it is about the OIKOS we are called to serve and reach!

Close your time in prayer for those in your Life Group and OIKOS! There might be someone in your group right now who feels like their in a jail cell! They might need your prayers and encouragement to help set them free!

WELCOME: What is your favorite kind of candy?

WORSHIP: Open your hearts to God with singing, prayer, or a poem. Be open and creative as you meet Him. Thank the Holy Spirit for meeting with you and be sensitive to His presence in your midst.

WORD: We can see the Spirit of God moving powerfully in the book of Acts. People were ready to meet God. God's people were open to sharing the Good News. The results were amazing. Entire households came to Christ and experienced the joy of salvation and baptism. The same thing is happening around the world today.

1. Can you think of something that has changed since you were a child?
How is it different? How do you feel about the change?

2. Simon Peter was a Jew. He lived under very strict food laws. Read Acts 10:9-21.
What do you think Peter was thinking after this vision? How do you think he was feeling?

3. How would you have reacted if you were Peter? How does his vision challenge you in meeting new and different people?

4. Read Acts 10:28-29 and 2 Peter 3:9. What do these verses tells us about God's attitude toward people? Do we have God's attitude?

WITNESS: How can the following formula be worked out in your Life Group?

Earnest Seeker + Ready Believer + The Word + The Holy Spirit = Salvation & Baptisms!

Remember:
Often times we think evangelism is the job of spiritual Super Christians! We underestimate what God can do through each and every Christian when we gather together in community and connect with our OIKOS! Remember, it is not what you do ... it is what God would like to do through you!

CLOSE WITH PRAYER: These past weeks I have been deeply moved by the challenges faced by members of our Fellowship! People are wrestling with marriages, children, health, and fmances! These things can put a tremendous drain on our emotional reserves, and our faith. Take some time to pray for the people in your life group. Word: This Sunday we looked at the call of the Apostle Paul and the key part that Ananias played in this important Biblical event. It is interesting in this story that Paul was headed somewhere, to do something, but God completely changed his plans.

1. Have you ever experienced a major change of direction? Maybe you headed for one job, but took another. Perhaps you wanted to attend one school, but graduated from somewhere else. What was your moment of change, and how did it affect your life?

2. Do you think God was in the change?
Did you think He was there in the midst of the experience?

3. Read Exodus 13:17-22. The deliverance of Israel from Egypt is one of the greatest Old Testament narratives. They spent 40 vears in the wilderness!

A. How did God lead His people?

B. Would you like it if God led His people
this way today?

4. How does God lead us today?

5. Are you a good follower?

Welcome: Have you ever planned to meet somebody somewhere…
but the plan got all messed up?

Worship: Be creative in opening your hearts to God! Take time for a song, poem, video clip, story, or testimony! Spend some moments in prayer. Invite the Holy Spirit to meet with you as your teacher, friend, encourager, and the giver of great gifts!

Word: This past Sunday we looked at Philips Spirit led meeting with the Ethiopian. We saw how God directed their paths so that they crossed at exactly the right time and place. Today we will explore how God can lead us and use us to His glory!

1. Can you think of a serendipitous, unusual, or unexpected encounter that you have had? This could be that time when you ran into just the right person, at just the right moment! What impact did this meeting have on your life?

2. Have you ever had a sense that you should have done something…
but did not do it? What happened? How would you do it differently?

3. Read Genesis 12:1-6.

A. What did God tell Abram in verse 1?

B. What did Abram do in verse 4?

C. What would you do if God said this to you?

4. This past week I have been reflecting deeply on the possibility of 2,000 Christians occupying our property. I confess to you that it excites me, scares me, and saddens me all at the same time. Spend some time dreaming in your Life Group.

A. How would it influence the North end of San Bernardino to have a 2,000 person church move their ministry to Sierra Way and Parkdale?

B. What could a church that size, with those resources, do with this property?

5. What emotions come into play when you think about this kind of a change?

Witness: Read this quote by J. Vernon Mcgee. How can it apply to your ministry this week? The Spirit of God had gone ahead to prepare the heart and to prepare the messenger. This leading of the Spirit of God is absolutely essential. I'm afraid that a great deal of personal work is done in a haphazard manner and without the leading of the Spirit of God. I believe that we ought to make it a matter of definite prayer before we talk to anyone. We should talk to the Lord about the individual before we talk to the individual about the Lord. It is not simply that we need the Holy Spirit to lead us. What we need is for the Spirit of God to go ahead of us and prepare the way, then to call us up to where He is. We want to go where the Spirit of God is moving.

Close with prayer in the spirit of Philip and Abram:

Oh Lord, we praise you, and we trust you. Forty-four years ago, you moved Calvary Baptist Church from 19th and E. St up to Parkdale and Sierra Way. Now we are experiencing a shifting and a stirring once again. What is your will for your church? Whom do you want on this corner? Where would you have NorthPoint to go? What would you have us to be? Lead us Oh Lord with great clarity and joy. Let us know your will for us. Let us unite our hearts together as your children, and together seek your will for our Fellowship. Give us a sense of excitement and peace about following you!
We love you and we trust you. In Jesus name, AMEN.

Worship: Be creative in opening your hearts to God! Take time for a song, poem, video clip, story, or testimony! Spend some moments in prayer. Invite the Holy Spirit to meet with you as your teacher, friend, encourager, and the giver of great gifts!

Witness: Ask God to give you an opportunity this week to share the ABC’s with somebody in your oikos! Be ready for the chance when it comes!

Word: Simon Peter is an awesome man with an awesome story. He began as a fisherman and ended up an Apostle. At one point Peter was a fleshly failure. When Jesus was finished with him, he was an awesome spirit filled leader. Praise God that we are on a journey with Jesus that will not end until we see Him in eternity! He is at work in us and He will never quit!

1. Is there an exciting area of your life that is growing, changing, or happening?

2. How has your Christian walk been growing or changing lately?

3. Read Luke 22:54-62.

A. Why do you think Peter denied Jesus?

B. Describe how Peter felt when Jesus looked at him!

4. Have you ever been keenly aware of God’s love, forgiveness, and restoration?
What did it feel like?
What did God do for you?

5. Think about the way Jesus treated Simon Peter. If Jesus is our model then how should we treat people who have failed? What should our attitude be?

6. Read Psalm 40:1-3 aloud together. How do these verses speak into your life?

I waited patiently for the Lord to help me,
and he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire.
He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along.
He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see what he has done and be amazed.
They will put their trust in the Lord.

Welcome : What is your favorite meal?

Worship : Be creative in opening your hearts to God! Take time for a song, poem, video clip, story, or testimony! Spend some moments in prayer. Invite the Holy Spirit to meet with you as your teacher, friend, encourager, and the giver of great gifts!

Witness : Take time in your Life Group to pray for the people in your OIKOS. Ask God to bless them. Ask God to open an opportunity for you to share the ABC's and serve them. Fervent prayer and diligent service will open amazing spiritual doors

Word : The Last Supper was a powerful time of connecting with Israel's past, and pointing to a glorious future. In a few short sentences, Luke reminds us of several key teachings of Jesus. Since this meal was very important, so are the words of the Master.

1.Can anyone in your Life Group remember an interesting, different or special Communion Service that you have ever experienced?

2.Jesus make several amazing declarations during this Passover Meal. Explore these teachingd and apply them to your own life and ministry.
A.After supper he took another cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people – an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you. Luke 22:20 (NLT) What does it mean to you that Jesus Christ poured out His blood to make you a child of God? How loved do you feel?

B.But among you it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant. Who is more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves. Luke 22:26-27 (NLT) What does it mean to serve God,your family and the church? How are you doing this?

C.The disciples began to ask each other which of them would ever do such a thing. Then they began to argue among themselves about who would be the greatest among them. Luke 22:23-24(NLT) Why do Christians get into arguments about their religious positions of authority? How do we get past the arguments and truly serve one another?

3.What is Communion [The Lord's Supper] like for you? Has God been meeting you in a special way lately? Do you pray a special prayers? Do you have a special traditions for your times of communion?

Close with prayer for the needs that have been shared. Remember to thank God for the gifts of His Son!

Word: This past Sunday we looked at the teachings of Jesus in Luke 21:5-37. Jesus spoke about the destruction of Jerusalem that was only a generation away. He also spoke about the end of the age. [Or, the end of time.]

1. Why are people so interested in prophecy and the end of the world?

2. How does the thought of the world ending make you feel?

3. Many Christians spend lots of time pondering the return of Christ. They get very excited about charts, graphs and manmade books. What did Jesus say to His very closest disciples about His return in Acts 1:6-7?

4. What did Jesus focus on in these verses?

As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God.
The time of my death is near. I have fought the good fight,
I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize
is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing

“It’s not where you go…it’s where you ARE!”
Michael White

Welcome… Greet and connect with one another. Take some time to find out how everybody’s week has been.

Worship… Now take some time and connect with God. Sing, pray, meditate, listen to a song. Enjoy this time of putting off the weeks challenges, and relaxing in the presence of God. Remember that God loves to “Hang Out” with you!

Witness Take some time to discuss and pray over those in your OIKOS that need to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Ask the Lord to incline their hearts and to give you a chance to share with them. Make a plan to deliberately see them this week.

Word… The Sunday before last, Pastor Paul said that “Our Church is not in trouble. In fact, it’s healthier than it’s been in decades.” He gave some qualifying statements to back it up.

1. As a group, discuss what areas of health you currently see present or coming on the horizon to NorthPoint.

This past Sunday, I (Michael) modified Paul’s statement to simply “NorthPoint is a healthy church.” I said that before we can agree or disagree wit this statement that we had to clarify and qualify the words “healthy” and “church”.

1. What is “church”? (Hint: Take a look at Romans 16:1-5)
2. When you hear the word “church”, what thoughts, feelings, or emotions does the word evoke?

The Greek word in the Bible that we translate into “church” is the word “ecclesia.” Ecclesia literally means “a gathering”. Every biblical reference to church or ecclesia refers to a group of people and never a location or building. Since we know, biblically speaking, that “church” is a gathering not a gathering place, we can now determine whether the “gathering” that meets at NorthPoint is “healthy”.

1. What are 2-3 strong areas of health in your Life Group?
2. What are 2-3 areas in which your Life Group still has room to grow?
3. Spend some time discussing how your group can gain that growth?
In Sunday’s gathering, we discussed four benchmarks of a healthy ecclesia or gathering of believers. Those are…

1. A healthy church must be committed to true biblical teaching…(James 1:22)
a. Where do you see this most evident in the gathering of believers at NorthPoint?
b. What do you see as an area in need of growth?
c. How can your Life Group fill in the gap and help produce that growth?

2. A healthy church must have strong biblical leadership…(2 Timothy 4:1-4)
a. Where do you see this most evident in the gathering of believers at NorthPoint?
b. What do you see as an area in need of growth?
c. How can your Life Group fill in the gap and help produce that growth?

3. A healthy church focuses on discipleship… (Matthew 28:19-20, Colossians 1:28)
a. Why must a church focus on discipleship?
b. “Not everyone evangelized becomes a disciple but every disciple evangelizes.” Agree or disagree? Why?
c. “Discipleship necessitates evangelism.” Agree or disagree? Why?

4. A healthy church has a biblical understanding of membership…(Hebrews 10:23-25)
a. How is church membership a two-way street?
b. Are members who rarely or never attend the gathering really members?
c. In what areas do you need to step up your commitment to the church body?

Final personal reflection…take some time a pray personally and corporately about whether you and your group are more committed to the “gathering” or the gathering place.

Remember, “church” is NOT where you go, it’s where you are!

Admit you are a sinner. Romans 3:23
Believe Christ died for you. Romans 10:9
Choose to follow Jesus. Matthew 4:19

8/2/09 Special Decision Life Notes
Pastor Paul M. Reinhard

Welcome: How many different places have you lived in your adult life?

Worship: Be creative in opening your hearts to God! Take time for a song, poem, video clip, story, or testimony! Spend some moments in prayer. Invite the Holy Spirit to meet with you as your teacher, friend, encourager, and the giver of great gifts!

Witness: Be praying for your OIKOS this week! Ask God to show you “the man of peace.” This person is open to the gospel, and is the key to reaching a completely new OIKOS. Pray a special blessing upon that person and their household!

Word: For months, our church has been praying about the direction God would have us to go! We have read books, attended symposiums, and had special prayer meetings! We have shared with you candidly that our money coming in is less than our money going out. The time has come to make some decisions. On August 23rd we will be having a special business meeting. For the next couple of weeks our Life Groups will be engaging in some Biblical reflection to prepare for that meeting.

1. Did Jesus own a building? How do you think it affected His ministry?

________________________________________________________________________

2. Did the Apostle Paul or Peter own a building? How did it affect their ministry?

________________________________________________________________________

3. Read Acts 19:8-10. Make a list of the events that happened! You will come up with different numbers, depending upon how you group them, and your Bible translation. Carefully analyze the flow of the story. What happened? What did Paul do? What was the fruit of his ministry?

A. __________________________________________________________________

B. __________________________________________________________________

C. _________________________________________________________________D. _________________________________________________________________

E. _________________________________________________________________

F. _________________________________________________________________

G. _________________________________________________________________

H. _________________________________________________________________

4. Read Acts 17:24-25, 1 Peter 2:4-5, and 1 Corinthians 6:19. Where does God live? Does He live in a building? Does He live in a body?

_______________________________________________________________________

5. Think about our Vision… Mentoring, Life Groups, Celebration.

A. Where can you do Mentoring?

_______________________________________________________________________

B. Where can you do Life Groups?

_______________________________________________________________________

C. Where can we do Celebration if we sell our facility?

_______________________________________________________________________

Prayer: Close your time together in prayer. Pray for God’s will for our church. Pray for His leading and protection. Pray that we will hear His voice, and follow Him. When Dr. David Yongii Cho, the pastor of the largest church in the world, was asked his secret for success he said, “I pray and obey!” That was his simple secret, pray and obey!

_PERSONAL AND FAMILY REFLECTION

This reflection is for your consideration during the week. We will be speaking about this in Life Group next week. Please spend time in your listening room with these things!

At our last Board meeting, Pastor Chris and I [Paul] offered our resignations to the Board. We told the Board that if they wanted to turn the church around and go back toward a “traditional” model of ministry, that we would truly respect and honor their wishes. The Board unanimously voted to pursue the Vision of Mentoring, Life Groups, and Celebration. They observed that Calvary/NorthPoint has been doing traditional style ministry on our property since 1965. The church has ridden the attendance roller coaster between 150 and 300 worshipers through all of that history. We have only been marginally effective at the main goal Christ gave the church. We have not been radically and wildly effective at winning souls and making disciples. Our city is not fundamentally different because we are here.

Chris and I are going to make the same offer to our congregation. If you would like our resignations, we will humbly tender them. But if you believe that God would like to do a mighty work in this community, through the Cell Model of ministry that we are pursuing, then we would be honored to serve you, and lead you, in that direction.

Our Staff and Board have prayed together for months about these things. We are tired of spending most of our meetings and energy on buildings and budgets. We are ready to sell the “synagogue” which has become a “financial millstone around our necks” and go in search of an affordable “hall of Tyrannus” in the center of our corporate OIKOS.

I [Paul] want to spend my days winning souls and making disciples, not worrying about payroll and making the mortgage. As I have been praying about these things at camp the last few weeks the story of Cortez came to mind. When he landed his soldiers on a foreign shore, he burned the boats. They understood the importance of winning the battle, because there was no going back from the Vision!

I am coming to believe that the decisions about our budget and property are more Vision than financial. If NorthPoint wants to be a traditional church, then she needs property upon which to run her programs. If NorthPoint is going to be a Cell Movement, then we can rent a place to Celebrate, or meet in a park during the nice months, and win thousands to Christ in our homes, schools, places of business, or the local coffee shop! Where we meet will reflect who we are and where we are hGod has given us a peace about launching out into the deep! I fully appreciate the magnitude of this discussion. The time has come. We must make decisions! We love you and will be praying for you as you pray for one another and us! Paul and Chris
Take the words of this song to your Listening Room this week as you meet with God!

Burn The Ships
(Steven Curtis Chapman and James Isaac Elliott)

In the spring of 1519 a Spanish fleet set sail
Cortez told his sailors this mission must not fail
On the eastern shore of Mexico they landed with great dreams
But the hardships of the new world make them restless and weak
Quietly they whispered, "Let's sail back to the life we knew"
But the one who led them there was saying

Burn the ships, we're here to stay,
There's no way we could go back
Now that we've come this far by faith
Burn the ships, we've passed the point of no return
Our life is here, So let the ships burn

In the spring of new beginnings a searching heart set sail
Looking for a new life and a love that would not fail
On the shores of grace and mercy we landed with great joy
But an enemy was waiting to steal, kill, and destroy
Quietly he whispers, "Go back to the life you know"
But the one who led us here is saying

Burn the ships, we're here to stay,
There's no way we could go back
Now that we've come this far by faith
Burn the ships, we've passed the point of no return
Our life is here, So let the ships burn

7/26/09 An Amazing Question! Luke 20:20-26
Pastor Paul M. Reinhard

Welcome: Has it been hot enough for you lately?

Worship: Be creative in opening your hearts to God! Take time for a song, poem, video clip, story, or testimony! Spend some moments in prayer. Invite the Holy Spirit to meet with you as your teacher, friend, encourager, and the giver of great gifts!

Witness: Take time in your Life Group to pray for the people in your OIKOS. Ask God to bless them. Ask God to open an opportunity for you to share the ABC’s and serve them. Fervent prayer and diligent service will open amazing spiritual doors.

Word: This past Sunday we watched deceitful men try to trap Jesus. We watched Jesus give a very brilliant answer to their questions.

1. Have you ever been around people who tried to trick or cheat you?
What were they like? What did they do?

________________________________________________________________________

2. Read Ephesians 4:14-16 out loud…

A. What does Paul want to see happen with us in verse 14?

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

B. What two things does Paul want to see happen to us in verse 15?

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________
C. In verse 16, what is the goal for the Body of Christ, and how does it happen?

_______________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________

3. Read Luke 20:20-26… How is the “agenda” of the religious leaders different from the picture of the Body of Christ that Paul gives us in Ephesians 4:14-16?

_______________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________

Close with a time of prayer. Focus on these verses.

Search me, O God, and know my heart:
Try me, and know my thoughts;
And see if there be any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalms 139:23-24 (ASV)

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.
He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard.
He will tell you about the future.
He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.
All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said,
‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’
John 16:13-15 (NLT)

Welcome: If somebody said to you right now, “Let’s go out and do some evangelism!” what thoughts would go through your mind?

Worship: Be creative in opening your hearts to God! Take time for a song, poem, video clip, story, or testimony! Spend some moments in prayer. Invite the Holy Spirit to meet with you as your teacher, friend, encourager, and the giver of great gifts!

Word: We tell people about things we like! Go eat at this restaurant! Watch this movie! Check out this store! It is easy to introduce people we love! This is my wife! This is my mom! This is my best friend!

1. Why does the concept of “doing evangelism” create so much stress for so many Christians?

2. Go around your circle and read Mark 5:1-20 aloud!

A. Describe the demon-possessed man! Did this man have issues? What were they?

B. Can you think of contemporary issues that are a parallel to the problems this man had!

C. From the story would you say that this man was a deeply learned spiritual man?

D. What did Jesus tell this man to do? Mark 5:19

E. How did people respond to this man? Mark 5:20

2. Go around your circle and read aloud Paul’s story in Acts 22:1-23.

A. What do we learn about Paul the Apostle in verse 3?

B. Did Paul teach a deep and theological lesson to the people in Acts 22?

C. What did he do? How did he share? What did he share?
3. Paul gives us a wonderful Biblical pattern for telling our story! Take some time at home, fill in the blanks, and ask God for an opportunity to share your story with someone who is eager to hear it! Someone called this his “elevator story!” It’s a story they could tell between floors 1 and 15 in an elevator!

A. My life before Christ!

_______________________________________________________________________

B. How I met Christ!

_______________________________________________________________________

C. What God saved me from!

_______________________________________________________________________

D. The difference Christ has made in my life!

_______________________________________________________________________

4. Close your time in prayer for the advance of God’s Kingdom through you!

_______________________________________________________________________

A little story for your personal meditation:

One day as a woman was crossing a street at London station, an old man stopped her. He said to her, "Excuse me, ma'am, but I want to thank you." She looked up and exclaimed, "Thank me?" He replied, "Yes'm, I used to be a ticket collector, and whenever you went by you always gave me a cheerful smile and a good morning. I knew that smile must come from inside somewhere. Then one morning I saw a little Bible in your hand. So I bought one, too, and I found Jesus.
--James S. Hewett

Witness: Be praying this week that God will give you His passion for the lost. Ask God for an opportunity to share the ABC’s with someone in your OIKOS! Draw close to Christ, and ask Him to use you, to His glory, in a new and wonderful way!

Icebreaker – Where do you believe you gained the majority of your beliefs and understanding about sex and sexuality?

Worship: Spend some time in worship of your creator. Whether that is through song, praise, thanksgiving, scripture reading, etc…

Word:

“Suppose you came to a country where you could fill a theatre by simply bringing a covered plate on to the stage and then slowly lifting the cover as to let everyone see, just before the lights went out, that it contained a mutton chop or bit of bacon, would you not think that in that country something had gone wrong with their appetite for food”
-C.S. Lewis

1. C.S. Lewis wrote this in the 1940’s in regards to our unhealthy appetite for sexuality. Do you think this quote still rings true today? How so?

2. Read Genesis 1:27-28. God created sex, “Be Fruitful and multiply,’ yet among Christians it has become a taboo topic. Why do you think this is?

3. What role has God played in your sexuality?

4. Read Mark 12:28-34. How do these four areas of our lives tie in with our sexuality?

5. Read 1 Corinthians 7:1-7, According to this passage what can we learn about God’s expectations for us?

6. Read Galatians 5:19-23 What parts of these passages characterizes your life. Are you living a spirit directed life or a sinful nature led life?

Witness: Spend some time and share with your group those that you are praying for and those that you’re sharing Christ with. It is important for you to all be praying for one another as you head out to share Christ in your city.

Welcome: What was your favorite thing to do with your parents when you where a child or teenager?

Worship: Open your hearts to God in a creative way. Take time to sing, pray, listen, or share. Put aside the pressure of the week and connect with one another during this special Life Group time.

Word: We are going to be looking at the spiritual influence that parents have upon their children. This could bring up some sensitive, even painful thoughts, so be very kind and gentle with one another. Only share what is comfortable for you.

1. What spiritual memories do you have from the family groups in which you were raised? Do you have different memories from different groups during different periods of your childhood? What were the special lessons that you remember?

2. Were there people outside of your family unit who had a special spiritual influence upon you? What did you learn from them?

3. How do you feel about the spiritual content of your childhood?

4. Now, let us take a leap several thousand years into the past. Read aloud the challenge that God gave to His children as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. As you read jot down the instructions that stand out to you. What speaks to you, and why?

Deuteronomy 6:1-8

6. Read Psalm 78:1-8 and notice the emphasis that is placed upon stories. Children love stories. Teenagers and young adults love stories. Here is a challenge to you adults. Tell your children your stories. Include your family stories because they are very powerful in shaping your child’s understanding of their roots and place in this world.

A. Have you raised your kids on your stories?

B. Have you raised your kids on family stories?

C. Will you begin sharing age appropriate stores with your children? It will give you a wonderful common ground from which to discuss your faith and life!

Spend some moments in prayer and lift up your children to the Lord!

Icebreaker – What person has impacted your life the most? Why? (Someone other than God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit)

Worship: Spend some time in worship of your creator. Whether that is through song, praise, thanksgiving, scripture reading, etc…

Word:

1. Have you ever been in any kind of mentoring relationship? What was it about? What did it consist of?

2. When you first found Christ what was your experience? Did you feel as though there was someone there to “walk along side you?”

3. What is our responsibility as Christians to one another?

4. Read Genesis 4:9 and Philippians 2:3-4. Which passage represents the modern Christian church? Which passage should we be living up to, and how do we do it?

5. If you are already part of the Year of Equipping mentoring process share with your group your experience so far.

6. If you are not in a mentoring triad yet, share what some of your fears or hesitations might be in getting involved.
7. Over the next couple of weeks, I would recommend each person purchase the appropriate journey guide book; fill it out and connecting with their shepherd. This will be the first step in your discipleship journey, and soon you yourself will be making disciples.

2 Timothy 2:2 (NLT)
2 You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.
Witness: Spend some time and share with your group those that you are praying for and those that you’re sharing Christ with. It is important for you to all be praying for one another as you head out to share Christ in your city.

Welcome: What were some great concerts you have been to in your life?

Worship: Doing Life together is about meeting with God and one another. It is about opening our hearts to God, and to one another. Enjoy your time together. Pray, sing, share, open up to God, and one another. Life Groups are a special time to step outside of normal time, and space, and to meet with the God who is both inside and outside of our time and space! When you meet with Him, anything can happen!

Word: For three Sundays we are taking a look at the three key parts of our NorthPoint Vision. Celebration came first, next Sunday will be Life Groups, followed by Mentoring.
The topic of Celebration opens up a great discussion about God, and how we experience Him. I pray that today’s Life Notes encourage you in your walk with God. Be open to reflecting about how authentic your experience with God truly is.

1. What is the weirdest way you have ever seen people meet with God? \
How did it make you feel?

2. Do you like to meet God in a loud way, or a quiet way, or both? Does it vary from place to place, mood to mood, or moment to moment?

3. We are going to look at three places in scripture where the glory of God came down amongst people. As you read the passages, ask the following questions.

A. How do you think the people felt, who experienced these events?

B. How would you respond if God appeared like this to you today?

Exodus 40:33-35 ______________________________________________________

4. What do you think of the Greg Ogden quotes from Transforming Discipleship?

Information is not transformation
and preaching does not make disciples.

We want self initiating, reproducing,
and fully formed followers of Jesus Christ!

PERSONAL REFLECTION:
Spend some personal reflection time, this week, on this quote. Do you agree, disagree, or not know? Share your thoughts next week at Life Group.

“Why do we [the church] work so hard, do so much, and accomplish so little?”
Greg Ogden would give us the answer. George Barna and Dallas Willard will tell us
that American Christians do not see themselves as disciples
and they have no sense of calling to make disciples!
